CHRA Alumni Spotlight: Migration and the Russian War on Ukraine

CHRA MA alum Katya Korableva is now in her second year of the PhD program in Interdisciplinary Humanities at Concordia University, for which she received the competitive Fonds de recherche du Québec grant to support her doctoral research.
Her documentary film Cranes and Ships was screened as part of the 2024 Oxford Shorts International Film Festival in Oxford, UK, where it received the Humanitarian Award, and the 2025 Mimesis Documentary Film Festival in Boulder, Colorado. The twenty-minute film, shot in Saint Petersburg, Russia on an iPhone, was first developed as part of a core course requirement and then further developed for her thesis project in the MA Program in Human Rights & the Arts.
Katya also co-authored (with Gaëlle Le Pavic) the article "Humanitarian, Linguistic and Narrative Bordering in Georgia: Migrations in the Context of Russia’s War on Ukraine." The article was published in the June 2025 issue of Journal of Eurasian Geography and Economics. It examines migration of Ukrainians, Russians, and Belarusians to Georgia in the context of Russia’s war with Ukraine and their differing experiences therein. The article is based in part on research conducted for her MA thesis project, titled “(Im)mobile Subjectivities of Russian Dissent During the War on Ukraine.”
